Foster parents in short supply in Hawaii
State officials in Hawaii are concerned that they don't have enough foster parents to meet the needs of the kids in their system. The article says that the state has 2,700 foster kids, but only 1,900 "foster parents". It's unclear if that figure comes from counting individual parents - e.g., a couple wanting to be foster parents counts as 2 in that total - or individual families. I tried to find better figures but, unless I'm missing something, the state of Hawaii's family services department doesn't appear to have a Web presence. The closest thing is this page for the Department of Human Services, which looks like it was built at the dawn of the Internet. That's kind of telling, isn't it?
At the same time as it's appealing for more foster parents, Hawaii is committed to cracking down on current foster families in the wake of some high-profile neglect cases. A recent federal review gave the state low marks for failing to protect the kids under its care from abuse.
