ICE to Help Emergency Responders
Imagine being unconscious in a car accident with no way to provide your medical information. That's something Governor Rod Blagojevich is trying to remedy with "ICE."
It stands for "in case of emergency."
The program aims at helping emergency responders identify a person's medical history. All it takes is putting emergency contact numbers in your cell phone under the acronym ICE.
Eureka Fire Department's E.M.S. Director Jason Zilm said, "(It) gives us a contact person as far as getting us more information or getting that parent involved in the situation so it could be utilized as that. A lot of times we get busy on a call and don't have a lot of time to do something like that."
Signs on Illinois interstates went-up today to remind motorists about the program.
The ICE concept was the brainchild of Cambridge-based paramedic Bob Brotchie, who works for the East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust. Launched in early 2005 in England, the program gained widespread notoriety after the London Subway attacks.
