Cruise record: Port Everglades sets record on cruise passengers in a single day
ZEW! Life is good in the first world. Spring Break meant record-break at Port Everglades this weekend. People took to the seas and returned from Caribbean vacations in record numbers at the port Saturday. The last record was set on Jan. 3, 2009, when 49,234 passengers sailed in and out of the port in a single day, Port Everglades spokeswoman Ellen Kennedy said. "It's spring vacation and people recognize there's a great value in taking a cruises," Kennedy said. "All your food and entertainment are included." Nine cruise ships sailed from Port Everglades on Saturday, including the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas. The massive ship brings cruise passengers these firsts at sea: a Central Park replica, an aquatic amphitheater with high-dive performances and a zipline. Kennedy attributes the new record to larger ships such as Oasis, which can hold 6,000 passengers. The nine cruise ships are two less than when the last record was set. If lined up, the nine cruise ships docked at Port Everglades would stretch 8,233 feet, or the equivalent of nearly 27 football fields.</p>
